Electric guitars are alot more complex, most being solid bodied as opposed to the hollow acoustics therefore producing little sound when strummed requiring an electric amplifier to project the sound. Most beginners find the electric to be more confusing than the acoustic with more buttons and knobs and of course more things to go wrong. However, they are easier to play due to having lighter strings easier to press down thus eliminating the sore fingers associated with learning on the acoustic variety. It also must be taken into consideration that the electric guitar is not only used for strumming chords but also for playing dynamic "guitar leads".
